As a product manager at a tech company, no two days are exactly the same. Each day presents a unique set of challenges, opportunities, and surprises. However, there are certain tasks and activities that are common to most product managers, and they give a glimpse into what a typical day in the life of a product manager looks like.
… It’s a grind fam, but if you’ve got the gift of creation – it can be well worth it.
Morning
(6:00 AM – 8:00AM ish) The day usually starts with checking emails and responding to any urgent requests or issues that may have come up overnight.
(9:00 AM, starts at 9:20 because your Director is always late) This is followed by a quick stand-up meeting with the development team to get an update on the progress of ongoing projects and discuss any roadblocks that may have come up.
(10:00 AM – 11:00 AM) The product manager then reviews the product roadmap and prioritizes the day’s tasks.
(11:00 AM – 11:30 AM) Next up is a meeting with the design team to review wireframes and mockups for new features or products. The product manager provides feedback and approves designs before they move on to the development stage. This is followed by a meeting with the marketing team to discuss upcoming product launches and promotions.
Afternoon
Mid-Day
(11:30 AM – 12:00~12:30 PM) Lunch: Walk to Jimmy Johns, finish sandwich by the time you get to the park, watch dogs play… Daydream about startup ideas.
(12:30~1:00 PM-ish – 2:00 PM) After lunch, the product manager meets with the development team again to review code updates and provide feedback. This is followed by a meeting with the sales team to get feedback on the product’s usability and gather insights into what customers are looking for.
(2:00 PM-ish – 3:00 PM) The product manager then spends some time analyzing customer feedback and usage data to identify areas of improvement and opportunities for new features. This information is used to update the product roadmap and prioritize tasks for the upcoming weeks.
Afternoon
(3:00 PM – 3:30 PM, 3:30 PM – 4:30 PM, 4:30 PM- 4:45 PM … )The rest of the afternoon is spent in meetings with cross-functional teams to discuss ongoing projects and brainstorm new ideas for the product. The product manager also spends some time reviewing industry trends and competitive landscape to ensure that the product is staying ahead of the curve.
(5:00 PM – 6:00 PM) The day usually wraps up with a quick catch-up with the team to review the day’s progress and set priorities for the next day… Also, table tennis, no idea why, but yeah.
(6:00 PM – 6:30 PM) The product manager then responds to any remaining emails and completes any pending tasks.
Of course, no day is complete without some unexpected surprises or emergencies that need to be addressed. But for the most part, this is what a typical day in the life of a product manager at a tech company looks like. It’s a busy, challenging, and exciting role that requires a diverse range of skills and a deep understanding of the product, the customers, and the market.
